The Queens from South Sudan
Women are fleeing the civil war in South Sudan and seeking safety across the border in neighboring Uganda.
They are escaping both conflict and hunger, facing the risk of rape and other forms of sexual violence in their home communities. Often arriving alone with their children, they leave behind husbands who remain in the village to protect their belongings and, in some cases, engage in conflict with the rebels.

My husband was slaughtered by the government soldiers outside the house of my family. I witnessed it myself.
«Then two soldiers raped me» I escaped afterwards. I will never return. My hope is to start studying here in Uganda.
Florence walked seven days with her one child from the village of Yei.
Katerina Kadi (45)
My husband was killed by the government soldiers when he was going to bring some food from our garden.
He was accused of being a rebel. «They cut over his throat» My hope and desire is to settle with my children here in Uganda. Katerina walked eight days with her four children from the village of Wugi.

My husband was shot at work by the government soldiers. «He was a rebel» I will never return back to South Sudan. Juan walked for three days with her two children from the village of Mangalatore.

I escaped with my husband from our village. Before we got to the border, my husband decided to go back to bring more food. «There he was shot by the government soldiers»
I'm sick with heart problems and hope I can get medical help here in Uganda. Alice walked for two weeks with her five children from the village of Wugi

My husband was taken in our home at night. « Later I heard that he had been slaughtered» I don't want to return to South Sudan, but to get a safe life here in Uganda.
