BEST FRIENDS IN SANDTON

EVERYDAY SUCCESS: Best Friends Rene Malika (27) and Michelle Bogatsu (23) is among South Africa's best-known people, and is constantly using the manicure salon in Sandton's best shopping center. Rene and I are here because of Mandela. Because of him, I have received proper education. Because of him, I have as great opportunities as the whites. We have become a rainbow country, and Mandela is my father and my hero, says 23-year-old Michelle Bogatsu. Money she probably doesn't need. Nail polish on one finger at this shopping center costs as much as the shavers in Soweto earn on a good working day.

BARBERERS IN SOWETO

TAKE-AWAY BARBERERS: Using a car battery, two razors and cooking oil, Julio Ernest (17) and Dick Mgwenya (30) manage to survive. By the noisy main road into Soweto, two men sit and shave for a couple of dollars each. Both hairdressers and customers are on alert. If the police show up, we just have to run. In the old days, we were kicked by the police and called donkey. Today we are free thanks to Father Madiba.
