Uganda 2018

Building a home

Rose Patric (22), a home builder, fled South Sudan with her family in 2016, seeking safety. After years of displacement, they finally have the opportunity to construct their own house. In BidiBidi, Uganda, the world's largest refugee settlement, refugees granted asylum are allocated small plots of land where they can cultivate crops and build shelters. In the meantime, they reside in temporary tents.

Over a million South Sudanese have fled their homes out of fear for their lives, seeking refuge across the border in neighboring Uganda. Despite the signing of a peace agreement, civil unrest persists since the outbreak of war in 2013.

Bidi Bidi has burgeoned into one of the largest refugee settlements globally, accommodating over 270,000 residents who have fled violence and conflict in South Sudan.
